Developing our people

Nurturing and mentoring young talent has been central to our business success for more than 40 years. Our Engineering Academy, based in Leeds has been the springboard for the careers of some 5,000 apprentices since it first opened its doors in 1969. Many have gone on to take key roles within the construction industry, with a number still forming an important part of NG Bailey today.

The reputation of the Academy has prompted no fewer than 4,000 school and college leavers to apply for around 50 places as part of this year’s apprenticeship intake.

Apprentices develop their skills through a unique blend of classroom studies and extensive practical experience, site visits and regular mentoring.

We were delighted when former NG Bailey apprentice Shane Trevitt was invited to Buckingham Palace where it was announced he would represent his country after winning a nationwide competition to find the most talented apprentices.

Shane, currently working for NG Bailey as a craftperson, is part of Team UK, who will take on the world’s most highly skilled apprentices and employees at WorldSkills London 2011. After beating off competition in a number of heats, Shane will represent the UK in his specialist area, plumbing.

In addition to our investment in apprentices, we invest in the talent of our business across the board. We wouldn’t be here without them and for that we try to reward their commitment to us with our commitment to their future careers.
